Early Literacy Services
Strategic Planning with District Leaders
We collaborate with teams to evaluate foundational skills instruction and materials for quality and alignment to Tennessee standards. Together, we build a vision for high quality early literacy instruction and create or refine action plans to achieve this vision.
Coaching and Training for School Leaders
Side by side with leaders, we observe lessons, provide feedback, lead planning, and review school and classroom-level data. Our onsite and virtual coaching and training builds leaders’ capacity to lead early literacy instruction and helps teams identify and respond to trends.
Coaching and Training for Teachers
We provide onsite and virtual training and coaching that helps teachers explore the research behind how students learn to read and develop a vision of strong systematic and explicit foundational reading skills instruction.
Our Experience

Early Reading Training with TNTP and Tennessee Department of Education
In partnership with TNTP, we provided 5 days of training on reading foundational skills to approximately 11,000 PreK – Grade 4 educators as part of the state’s Reading 360 initiative during Summer 2021. This course trained teachers on a sounds-first approach to reading instruction and supported the use of Tennessee’s Foundational Skills Curriculum Supplement.
EL Education Implementation with Independence Mission Schools
In this 5,000 student network, we supported educators to adopt EL Education in grades PreK – 2. Working side by side with leaders, we created a district-wide vision and instructional plan for early literacy, provided intensive training focused on the EL Skills Block, and provided targeted coaching to leaders. We are currently working to build capacity within the network by developing a team of teacher leaders who will lead professional learning and teacher planning over time.
CKLA and Early Literacy Training for Tulsa Public Schools
In this 32,000 student district, we provided training to improve early literacy instruction and strengthen the district’s implementation of Core Knowledge Language Arts in grades K – 5. We provided live and asynchronous training for teachers on foundational literacy skills, building knowledge and reading comprehension, and planning practices such as unit and lesson study. For school leaders and coaches, we led training on CKLA’s Assessment and Remediation Guide to support students who are struggling to master reading foundational skills.Â
