About this Course
We designed this course to provide all educators with access to the research and best practices for teaching adolescent literacy. Our hope is that this coursework will deepen your understanding of the nuances of how adolescents develop literacy and reading proficiency, spark shifts in practice that align with research, and empower you to make an even bigger difference in the literacy education of secondary students you support.
This course is designed to be a primer for research-based best practices for teaching literacy to secondary students, specifically those in Grades 5-12. The information in this course is intended to lay a solid foundation for much deeper learning and work around implementation of high-quality instructional materials that align with the reading research. We have designed each module in a way that could apply to teachers using any high-quality instructional materials, and encourage you to make connections to your context whenever applicable.
This course includes 15 modules and approximately 12-15 hours’ worth of content that you can explore at your own pace; we recommend completing the modules sequentially. We anticipate that each module will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete, although this will vary from person to person.
Audience
This course will be helpful to teachers, school leaders, and other stakeholders in education who want to strengthen their instructional support of adolescent readers and writers in Grades 5-12, with the ultimate goal of improving student outcomes for all.
